Finanace Time | Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the expansion of compressed biogas will help India’s energy needs

Apr 17,2023

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said that efforts are being made to rapidly increase the use of compressed biogas. This will greatly help India in meeting its energy needs through energy produced from domestic sources. He also said that 4G installations for compressed biogas have already been commissioned.

Much of India’s energy needs are covered by imports.
Speaking at the Global Conference of Compressed Biogas, Hardeep Singh Puri said that the government plans to establish 5,000 commercial compressed biogas plants by the year 2024-2025. There is a plan to produce 1.5 crore metric tons of compressed biogas with this. There is a plan to replace other gas used in the country through this CBG.

46 CBG installations already commissioned – Hardeep Singh Puri
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also said that 46 CBG plants have already been commissioned and compressed biogas is sold through 100 outlets. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the expansion of compressed biogas will help India’s energy needs.

What is compressed biogas
Compressed Biogas and CBG is a biological fuel and is similar to compressed natural gas (CNG) as both are compressed methane. Although compressed biogas is made from agricultural waste, aka agricultural waste. It is clear that with the increase in the number of CBG installations, the dependence of the country on natural gas will decrease.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had authorized the use of bio-compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG) in motor vehicles as an alternative to CNG on June 16, 2015. The potential for multi-source CBG production in India is estimated at 62 million metric tons (MMT) with 370 MMT of bio-fertilizer production. Compressed biogas will be produced from agricultural waste, sludge, sugar cane sludge, cow manure and other sources.
