Four smart cities to develop in Andhra Pradesh by 2021

The four Smart City projects in Andhra Pradesh will become operational by the financial year (FY) 2020-21, informs Hardeep Singh Puri, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister. These four cities of the state include Kakinada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Amaravati. The four cities in Andhra Pradesh and the two cities in Telangana were selected as Smart Cities under the Smart Cities Mission, initiated by the central government in 2015. in Telangana, Greater Warangal and Karimnagar would be developed as Smart Cities.

A total of 210 projects worth Rs 8,814.18 crore have been identified in these four cities in Andhra Pradesh. In Kakinada, over 70 projects are at development stage, costing Rs 1,986.08 crore, 39 projects worth Rs 1,610.95 crore in Tirupati and 47 projects worth Rs 1,777.29 crore in Visakhapatnam. Around 53 projects worth Rs 3,439.86 crore in Greater Warangal are at various stages of implementation.

However, Amaravati is in the process of engagement of project management consultants (PMCs), which will be completed in the coming weeks.

The central government will announce the remaining 10 cities under the Smart City Mission by January-end 2018. Till now, the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has included overall 90 cities under the scheme.
