May 16,2018

For the second consecutive year, Indore in Madhya Pradesh has been declared as the cleanest city under the Swachh Survekshan 2018. It is followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh. Minister of State for Housing Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday announced the results of Swachh Survekshan 2018. The survey aims to estimate levels of cleanliness across cities in the country.

Hardeep Singh Puri took to micro-blogging site Twitter and congratulated the cities for their performance. “Looking at the way citizens of big winning cities had turned Swachhata into a Jan Andolan. I am not surprised at the results. Congratulations Indore and Bhopal for a repeat performance at 1 and 2. Well done Chandigarh for coming in 3rd. Others will surely try & catch up next year,” Puri tweeted.

He further said, “79% of the respondents from 4,203 cities and town have reported a definite improvement in cleanliness. I would prefer to call these results as ‘Citizens’ Verdict’ on sanitation in urban areas given the scale and eagerness of citizens’ participation.”

Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also congratulated and thanked residents for their efforts in keeping the city clean. “I’m extremely happy, drawing inspiration from PM we are running Swachh Bharat Abhiyan across state. I congratulate & thank all residents, it is due to their efforts. We’ll continue efforts to maintain it: #MP CM on Indore & Bhopal being ranked 1st & 2nd in Swachh Survekshan ’18,” Chouhan.

Jharkhand has been adjudged as the best-performing state in the survey followed by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. Vijayawada has been ranked as cleanest big City’ and Tirupati as the best city in ‘Solid Waste Management’.

The names of the worst performing cities would be announced on the day the awards would be presented, Puri said.

Compared to the previous surveys, this year’s exercise allocated substantial weight to the feedback from citizens based on their daily experience. Indore was the cleanest city last year as well but that survey was conducted only for around 430 cities. This time it was conducted for around 4,200 cities.
