Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Friday that after achieving the target of selling petrol containing 10 per cent ethanol, India will start supplying 20 per cent biofuel blended petrol in the next few days. Although it will still be in the experimental phase.

Speaking at 'Dance to Decarbonise', the first public awareness program of India Energy Week 2023, he said that India has achieved the target of selling 10 percent ethanol blended petrol (petrol 90 percent, ethanol 10 percent) in June, while its deadline is November It was 2022.

Petrol with 20 percent ethanol will start soon
The Petroleum Minister said that 'E20 (petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol) will come on a pilot basis in select markets in a day or two'. Ethanol extracted from sugarcane as well as agricultural waste is being blended with petrol to reduce India's dependence on imported oil to meet its energy needs. Furthermore, ethanol contains less carbon than fossil fuels. This helps the country meet its carbon reduction goals.

E20 petrol will be available in these states
E20 is being launched in 11 States/UTs of Delhi, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab, Daman Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Hardeep Singh Puri said that the initial target for E20 was April 1, 2023, but we have extended it. Fifteen cities will be covered in the first phase. He said that by April 2025, the sale of petrol containing ethanol will be started in the entire country.

Ethanol-rich petrol has not only increased the country's energy security, it has also saved foreign exchange of over Rs 41,500 crore. There has been a reduction of 27 lakh tonnes in greenhouse gas emissions. More than Rs 40,600 crore is being paid promptly to farmers for ethanol.
