Oil Marketing Companies earlier this month raised the prices of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) or cooking gas cylinder of the 14.2-kg variant by Rs 50. Even as the latest hike sent the LPG price up to Rs 1,053 in Delhi, union minister of petroleum and natural gas Hardeep Singh Puri has said that the cost in India is among the lowest in the world.
“As a result of the ‘Citizen First’ policies of the Modi Govt, the rise in the price of cooking gas in India is much lower than the global level,” the union minister stated on Monday adding that cooking gas prices around the world have risen on account of an increase in input cost.
He also made a comparison of the cooking gas prices in seven countries including the US, Canada, crisis-hit Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Australia and India. The price of 14.2 kg cylinder came out to be the lowest in India among the countries name above.
India – Rs 1,053
Pakistan – Rs 1,113.73
Nepal – Rs 1,139.93
Sri Lanka – Rs 1,343.32
US – Rs 1,754.26
Australia – Rs 1,764.67
Canada – Rs 2,411.20
After the July 6 hike in prices of LPG cylinders, domestic cooking gas cylinders now cost Rs 1,053 in Delhi, Rs 1,052.50 in Mumbai from Rs 1,002.50 earlier, to Rs 1,079 in Kolkata from Rs 1,029 earlier, and Rs 1068.50 instead of Rs 1,058.50 in Chennai.
After the increase in prices, the petroleum minister reacted saying that you can't look at fuel price in isolation, see what is happening in the global markets. While maintaining that the Central government has managed to keep the prices stable, Puri stated that the prices of commercial LPG cylinders have been cut by about Rs 200.
He also underscored that the prices (of petroleum products) are fixed under the Administrative Pricing Mechanism, adding that all the stakeholders will have to work together. “You should also check the international prices of crude oil. India is one of those countries where fuel is not available. There is APM,” the minister said.
