Union minister of state for agriculture and farmers' welfare Shobha Karandlaje said that the central government has released an additional 25 lakh litres (2,500 KL) of kerosene for the traditional boat fishermen of the coast.
The minister said that the government had sanctioned more than the quota allotted for 2022-23. The Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas had sanctioned 5,472 KL of kerosene for the traditional boat fishermen of coastal Karnataka for 2022-23. The same was distributed among fishermen in phases. The ministry issued an order on Thursday to release an additional quota of 2,500 KL for coastal Karnataka. The central government has been responding to the demands of fishermen from coastal Karnataka. "I had appealed to the central government to sanction an additional quota of kerosene. Fishing is the lifeline of several families in coastal Karnataka. A large number of families depend on fishing for their livelihood. Hence, I appealed to the centre to consider the demands of the traditional boat fishermen of coastal Karnataka. Following this, union minister for petroleum and natural gas Hardeep Singh Puri has responded to the demands of fishermen," she said.
