The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) has joined hands with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to promote indoor sanitation and hygiene. The objective of the collaboration is to establish a Center of Excellence (CoE) at IIM Indore, which will provide best-in-class leadership and training for sanitation and waste management in urban areas of the country.

IIM Indoor Director Prof. Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Joint Secretary Himanshu Roy and Rupa Mishra signed the MoU in Delhi. Minister Hardeep Singh Puri unveiled the COE during the Clean City Dialogue and Tech Exhibition in Delhi. Ministry Secretary Manoj Joshi also participated in the programme. Prof. Roy said that IIM Indore has received a grant of Rs 19.95 crore from the Ministry. Indore has won the title of the cleanest city in the country for the past five years under the Swachh Bharat survey. The city has mastered sanitation and hygiene and the planning and implementation strategy implemented by the administration is globally appreciated. The mission of the organization is to become a relevant organization, which is determined to contribute to nation building. MU will focus on setting up CoEs that will design and implement training and development courses for political leadership, including mayors and ward councillors. It develops and strengthens their abilities and skills.

In the programme, Hardeep Singh Puri shared his views on the importance of the People’s Movement and COE. He said wealth generation leads to youth when they start thinking about building startups and doing economic activities. You might think that this is symbolic of a mass movement. Appreciating Himanshu Roy, I am sure that your initiative will act as an inspiration and encouragement to other institutions and organizations of the same level to follow and join this noble process.

The work of making Ayodhya clean is also going on

COE conducts research in sanitation and waste management and funds best practices in urban transformation. The COE will be under the direct administrative and academic administration of the Director, IIM Indore. It works as per the academic rules and regulations laid down by the institute. The Ministry will support the CoE for three years. IIM Indore received One District One Green Champion Award 2021 from Mahatma Gandhi National Council for Rural Education and Silver at AMBA-BGA Awards 2021 under CSR and Sustainability category. The company has also contributed to the Kanpur Smart City project and has taken steps to replicate Indore’s Swachh Yojana in Ayodhya.

Prof. Rai said the training will strengthen their capacity to take initiative for urban sanitation and waste management. In addition to training, COE also offers full-time and part-time programs in public policy, urban governance, and administrators, managers and executives, and front-line staff of corporations and local organizations. Our COE acts as an intermediary between municipal corporations and local organizations, businesses and service organizations. We are planning to set up an incubation center in partnership with IIT Indore. In addition to this we also provide advisory services on proper utilization of funds from corporate partners to urban local bodies to deliver municipal and civic services.
