YET News | Expansion of compressed biogas to meet India’s energy needs – Hardeep Singh Puri

Apr 17,2023

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that work is underway to rapidly scale up the use of compressed biogas. This will greatly help India to meet its energy needs through domestically produced energy. He also informed that 4G compressed biogas plant has already been commissioned.

A major part of India’s energy demand is met through imports.
Speaking at the Global Conference on Compressed Biogas, Hardeep Singh Puri said the government plans to set up 5000 commercial compressed biogas plants by 2024-25. It is planned to produce 1.5 crore metric tonnes of compressed biogas through these. There are plans to replace other gas consumed in the country through this CBG.

46 CBG plants already operational – Hardeep Singh Puri
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also said that 46 CBG plants have already been commissioned and compressed bio gas is being sold through 100 retail outlets.

What is Compressed Biogas?
Compressed bio gas and CBG are a biofuel and are similar to compressed natural gas (CNG) as both are compressed methane. Although compressed biogas is produced from agricultural waste i.e. from agricultural waste. Obviously, as the number of CBG plants increases, the country’s dependence on natural gas will decrease.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on June 16, 2015 allowed the use of bio-compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG) in motor vehicles as an alternative to CNG. The potential for CBG production under multiple sources in India is estimated at 62 million metric tonnes (MMT) with generation of 370 MMT biomanure. Compressed biogas will be produced from agricultural waste, sludge, sugarcane sludge, dung and other sources.
